This was a response posted on Facebook as a simple explanation of the project:

Well. Google maps only cover some parts of the northern hemisphere. So when millions of quid or hours go into a relief effort, nobody knows really how to get it to the place its needed. But people can put themselves on a map using their phone or a really basic computer even with slow internet. That’s the Humanitarian Open Street Map. A wiki map. The whole international community owns it. Anyone can have a username. Anyone can change it. We help people gather together and map their presence. Using their own hardware. Motorbikes, cheap Smartphones, pens and paper, etc.
